Decontamination Report

ARE Labs, July 2021

Summary

The VK Air was tested against six viral, bacterial, and fungal strains at ARE Labs in the USA, a top FDA-cleared bioaerosol laboratory. The results proved to be world class, making the VK Air the best clean air performance in a compact package.

Challenges

In a laboratory environment, a challenge is the exposure of bioaerosolized microorganism to a testing chamber.

VK Air Decontamination Report (ARE 2021) 7

MS2 Bacteriophage

RNA virus. RNA virus. MS2 is used as a surrogate for airborne pathogenic respiratory viruses, such as influenza and SARS-CoV-2.

VK Air Decontamination Report (ARE 2021) 8

PhiX 174 Bacteriophage

DNA virus. The PhiX 174 bacteriophage is a single-stranded DNA virus and is a surrogate for herpes simplex and smallpox viruses.

S. Epidermidis

Gram+ bacteria. Part of natural human flora, it can enter the body through blood, cough and wound secretion, and skin contact and is a surrogate for bacteria causing staph infection

VK Air Decontamination Report (ARE 2021) 10

P. Agglomerans

Gram- bacteria. Can cause human infections by wound infection or as a hospital-acquired infection and is a surrogate for bacteria causing black plague.

VK Air Decontamination Report (ARE 2021) 11

B. Subtilus

Bacterial spore. Representing the most resilient microorganism, it serves as a model for Anthrax and a surrogate for Clostridioides difficile, a common hospital pathogen.

VK Air Decontamination Report (ARE 2021) 12

A. Brasiliensis

Fungal spore. Previously known as A. Niger, is one of the most common sources of toxic black mold. While rare, it can also cause aspergillosis, a serious lung infection.

Methodology

The VK Air was placed in a 16m3 chamber equipped with laboratory-grade sensors and detection equipment.

First, as a control, each challenge was introduced to the chamber with the device switched off, and the results measured (red line in the results below). Then, the test was repeated three separate times with the device running at the highest fan speed. The resulting data from the sensors was averaged across the three tests (blue line).
