For an air purifier to effectively remove harmful microorganisms and improve indoor air quality, it must be able to efficiently remove particulate matter from the air. Particulate matter — physical contaminants such as dust, dirt, pollen, and smoke — is understood to be a significant risk factor to respiratory health1 and is known to exacerbate the spread of airborne viruses2.

Larger particulates can be easily filtered using conventional mechanical meshes or pre-filters. However, fine and ultrafine particulate matter (the kind that can be inhaled unnoticed and pose a substantial risk) requires specialized filter material.

Not all particulate matter filters are created equal, so ensuring they are classified to a set of internationally recognized standards is vital to reliable air filter performance, and ultimately allowing an air purifier to maintain good indoor air hygiene and safety.

HEPA classification
A HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filter is a mechanical air filter with a minimum class of H13 that can remove at least 99.97% of airborne particles with a size of 0.3µm (microns)3. HEPA classification was performed according to the EN 1822-4 European standard.


MERV rating
Minimum Efficiency Reporting Values (MERV) is a rating system developed to act as a comprehensive measure of an air filter’s performance. It rates an air filter’s ability to capture a range of particle sizes between 0.1 and 10µm. The MERV rating was performed according to the ASHRAE 52.2-2017 standard.
